PTA Events

I wish that I had been better over the course of this school year about taking pictures at our PTA events  (I guess I can redeem myself by taking more next year as it's looking like I'll be PTA President again :))

On March 1st, we celebrated Dr. Suess' birthday by having donuts, juice & milk about 1/2 an hour before school started.  Parents were encouraged to come to school early with their kids, bring a book and read to them.  It was a huge success!  So successful in fact, that we ran out of donuts and begged the lunch ladies for any extra food they had.   Thankfully, they had some banana bread and teddy grahams.   But, those that were there at 8:30, had donuts!   Note to self:  next year order like 25 dozen donuts!

Then, a couple of weeks later, we wanted to celebrate Math, so we had a little lunch activity on National Pi Day - March 14th.   I'm so grateful that I have Jon because he's the only one that showed up to help me with this one.  We had a basket for each grade that had math problems in it.  The kids could pick one, answer it and then get a "Math"-head.

All in all, another success PTA lunch time event!

Molar Pregnancy

This will be boring for most...it's mostly for our family journal, so that we remember the details of our experiences and maybe someone, at some point, will benefit from it.

We were hoping to announce to our family &  friends that we were expecting baby #7, but I had wanted to get to my first doctor's appointment first.   We had lost a baby between Emily & Lindsey and had announced it to everyone before our appointment, only to find out there was no heartbeat.   We hadn't told our parents, our kids, our siblings, etc.   My particular OB doesn't see patients for the first time until 10 weeks.   That appointment was about 10 days ago - on a Friday.

I had felt the usual pregnancy symptoms of fatigue, nausea (thankfully mostly just at night), weight gain & cravings.   I left in the morning and Jon got the kids off to school.  The appointment was full of paperwork, weight check, congratulations, figuring out the due date, talking about our birth plan, etc.  Jon sent a text telling me that he decided to come and he was on his way.   Then the doctor said "Well, let's take a look."

He started to do an ultrasound, with both of us thinking that Jon would walk in any minute.   Pretty quickly, it was obvious that he wasn't finding a baby and he said "I'm not seeing a placenta or baby.   This might be a molar pregnancy."  I had NEVER heard of a molar pregnancy before and my first responses was to feel really stupid that I had thought I was pregnant and wasn't.  I asked him what a molar pregnancy was and he explained that instead of a fetus growing, tissue grows.    He then found 2 little bubble looking things and I asked him if that meant it was twins.   He said he wasn't sure, but he wanted to show the ultrasound tech.

He left the room and I started to cry.   I instantly hated the idea of not having a baby.   But then, the doctor poked his head back in and said "I showed the picture to the tech and she thinks it might actually be 5 week old twins!"

For the next 90 seconds, I had the hope that not only was everything okay, but we would actually end our family with twins.   Insanely crazy, but wonderful!    I went into another ultrasound room and the tech started to do an ultrasound with the doctor watching.  It became quickly evident though that there wasn't a baby (or babies) in there.    It sounds crazy, but I am grateful for those 90 seconds.   Of course, I wish that happy news had lasted a lot longer than that, but I smile when I think of those 90 seconds.

The tech did a complete ultrasound and took all the necessary measurements.  It was easy for even me to see that there was nothing that resembled a baby at all.  Nothing.  No head, no spine, no heartbeat.  Just tissue.

The doctor told me that he'd talk with me in his office and then we poked our head in the waiting room to see if Jon was there.   He had come.  He had asked to come back and they told him he couldn't because no children were allowed in the ultrasound room.  Of course, the doctor would have let him come back, but after waiting 20 minutes and seeing no hope of being let into the room, he headed home with Hailey.

The nurse asked if I wanted to call him and wait for him to come back.  I wanted him there, but I just wanted to get the appointment over with.   The doctor came in and explained that I would need a D&C and that he'd probably do it the following Wednesday.   He ordered lab work and said that I'd need to follow up with him for about 6 months after the D&C to make sure that the tissue didn't grow back and make sure that it didn't grow into a cancer.

I had my blood taken, the whole time crying.   I walked slowly down the stairwell so that I wouldn't see anyone in the elevator and drove myself home.   Jon was wonderfully supportive and disappointed too.  He explained that sometimes an empty egg will be released, it will be fertilized and obviously because half the genetic tissue is missing, it doesn't grow correctly.

Jon and I instantly felt that we had probably been prepared for this.  He had had a feeling for a couple of weeks that something wasn't quite right and I had been extra, extra tired for a week before the appointment and told Jon that it was the sort of fatigue I had felt before when I had  a miscarriage.   There was obviously still a very real sense of loss.   We had planned that this would be our last pregnancy, our last baby, our last chapter of this phase of our lives.

We got a call later that afternoon from the doctor.  The lab results showed that my HCG levels were 150,000.  (normal for pregnancy women is between 10,000 & 15,000).   He decided that he wanted to do the D&C on Monday instead of waiting until Wednesday.      I was happy to get it taken care of sooner than later.  Why feel crummy for no reason?

The kids were sad when we told them when they got home from school.   Our friends & family & ward members have been so kind and loving and supportive.  It is such a humbling experience to have people drop off dinners, send text messages, etc., and to literally feel their love and support through prayers.

Jon worked a double shift on Saturday so that he could take me on Monday.  His sister Anne came up and watched Hannah & Hailey and we reported to the hospital at 10:30 Monday morning.   The surgery was supposed to happen at noon, but then the anesthesiologist got stuck in a surgery and they had to put the surgery off until 4.   It was a long, long wait.   Jon left at 3 to check on the kids and get them settled for the evening.  They came at got me about 4:15 and then the surgery started about 5.    It went really, really well.  The doctor told Jon that the bleeding was minimal and it appeared to be a total molar (which is much better than a partial molar).

My recovery has been really good.  I had minimal pain and minimal bleeding.  I instantly felt much better and have felt so grateful for feeling good.     I am so sad to think that the pregnancy didn't work out.   But, I know things happen for a reason and I'm really grateful that things went wrong early, instead of later.

I don't know what this means for our family.  We will follow up for 6 months and then decide whether we try again or not.   We are so grateful for the 6 wonderful kids we have!

Thank you so much for EVERYONE's love and kindness.  It really fills our hearts with healing & hope.

Indoor Soccer

I love Mondays!   I know, I'm crazy, but I really love them!   I usually spend the morning cleaning, so the house smells fresh and the carpets look vacumned!   I have a couple minutes before picking up Hannah at preschool, feeding the little girls lunch and then going to the store to buy icecream goodies to take to the school for a fundraiser-winner ice cream party!

I found these indoor soccer pictures.   Jack has played 2 sessions of futsal, Emily has played 2 sessions of indoor and Lindsey has played 2 or 3 sessions as well.   It certainly keeps us plenty busy in the winter.   The spring season is starting soon and I look at the calendar and am excited about it, but also dreading the super busy feeling of it.  Hannah & Kate wanted to play rec soccer, so I'll have 5 playing!

Anyway, here are some cute pictures of Lindsey.  This indoor season is always against boys.  They haven't won yet, but they score more and more goals each game.   It's such a nice group of girls!

Sorry this one is blurry - but I love the intensity on her face and her willingness to shove the boys out of the way!

Quilt Projects

I like posts like this because it's proof of what I've done with my time!   Part of me loves January & February!   It's a more low-key time of the year with less school & sport activities.   So, I'm able to sew almost daily!   Here are a few things I got done....(although I probably haven't sewed for a month again already!)

This was a baby boy quilt for a teacher at Longview.   She has been our teacher rep for PTA this year and her 1st baby is due in April.   This quilt was fun, but a ton of triangles!

And this beast!!   This HUGE quilt was for my brother, Mike.  I gave him the fabric for Christmas and then made it for him afterwards.   It ended up measuring about 80x90, so it was big.

And this cute wall hanging literally took me 2 hours from start to finish.  After doing bigger projects, it's so fun to do one that is quick.

Jack's Jr. Jazz season

Wow!!!  I have really failed lately in my blogging!   PTA-busyness & just keeping up with life and the kids has taken all my time.  We pulled off an extremely worthwhile "White Ribbon Week" (which is internet safety) at Longview.   Not very many Elementary Schools do a WRW, even though the average age that children begin pornography addictions is 7!   That's the average!  So scary!   It was a ton of work, but I felt like it was something really good that we did.  Even if we help one child stay away from that addiction, it was worth it.

And, we did a Dr. Suess reading event (which I'll probably blog about because I have pictures), a huge community council fundraiser and tomorrow is National Pi Day!  Ahhh!!

Anyway, over the last couple of months, Jack has been playing Jr. Jazz and has just loved it.   Absolutely loved it!   He had a wonderful coach and Jon was able to help a little bit, so that was fun.  I remembered to take my camera to one game, so here are the pics!

This picture is fun because he's being guarded by his cute friend, Xander.  We tried to get these 2 boys on the same team, but they put them on different ones.

President's Cup - St. George

We had a wonderful President's Day weekend and celebrated by traveling down to St. George for a few days of sun and warmth and to watch Jack's soccer team play in a tournament.

The kids and I left right after school on Thursday (after putting a last minute party together for Lindsey's class).   They were great on the drive and we arrived around 9:00 at night.   We had rented a condo and it was wonderful!  There were toys, a beautiful kitchen, 3 bedrooms. etc.      We explored the house and then went to bed.

The next morning, Jack had his 1st game at Dixie State.   It was a little chilly, but still sunny, and his team won.   After the game, we found a grocery store to buy stuff for breakfast and lunch and then headed back to the condo.   Jon & Mike met us there and were able to go to his 2nd game of the day.   He was playing awful, so I sent Jon over at half time to find out what was wrong.  Apparently, the ref almost didn't let him play because he had the wrong kind of cleats.   We had found cleats at Payless for $3, but apparently, they were baseball cleats.

So, after that game, we headed to Dick's to buy him new soccer cleats and then Mike drove to the St. George airport and picked up Becky & her 2 kids who had driven in from Phoenix.    We went to Olive Garden for dinner and had a blast hanging out in the condo and playing games.

Jack's next game was Saturday morning and he played great.  They won and we then were left to find out if they made it to the semi-finals.   We found out about an hour later that his team didn't make it by 1 point.   So, we shopped a little bit, and then went to a really fun rec center to swim later that afternoon.  We finished the day by doing dinner at Texas Roadhouse with Becky's in-laws, Marc & Betty.

We slept in a little on Sunday morning and then loaded up and headed home.  We were sad to leave the sunshine and return to snow, but it was such a treat to get away for a couple of days and enjoy family, great food, and a break from reality!

Celebrating Kate's Birthday

We decided to celebrate Kate's birthday over the course of a couple of weeks!      On her birthday, Jon & Jack were in Denver for the Broncos playoff game, so it was just the girls!  We were going to go to Artic Circle at Kate's request for her birthday and meet my siblings there, but a huge snowstorm came in, so we couldn't.   I ventured out to McDonald's (thankfully it's not very far from us) and brought that home for us to eat.    Then, we watched "The Spy Next Door" and ate popcorn.  We even stuck a candle in the popcorn bowl to sing to Kate.

The next day, Lindsey made Kate this darling cake.  There's a paintbrush on the upper left hand side and a puppy on the upper right hand side.  The cake was a cute turquoise color and it tasted delicious.

Then, on Sunday, we had a family birthday dinner for her.  She wanted spaghetti (yea!  Easy!) and brownies.   (Thankfully Jon & Jack arrived home safely about 2:30 in the morning after driving home from Denver).

Then, 2 weeks later, we had her friend party!   Over the summer, I signed Kate & Hannah up for some days of camp at The Little Gym and Kate happened to win 1/2 a birthday party.  So, we had her party at The Little Gym!  Easiest party ever!!!   And the kids had a blast!
They literally do everything - even serve the cake and icecream!

The kids get to play in the gym for an hour.  There are 2 instructors there that play games and dance and use the gymnastics equipment.  Then, they came out for cupcakes and icecream and finished off by opening gifts back in the gym.   (They even write a list of who game what gifts).

 Cute birthday girl!

Hannah and Cohen (he's a darling little boy that lives next door that loves to play with Kate.  He's only 3, but he kept up with all the 7 year olds just fine).

 Kage & Kate

Kate was NOT excited that we made her invite Hannah. She was worried that Hannah would "bug" her the whole time, but Hannah just did her own thing and had a fun time!

I love Kate's friends - they are so cute!
